This painting was painted in 1873.

Kuindzhi spent all summer of 1872 on Valaam. The result was the appearance of this ingenious creation. The landscape is at a crossroads. On the one hand, this is a realistic understanding of nature by the artist. But at the same time, the characteristic influence of romanticism is still felt.

The viewer feels romantic features in the foreground, which is deliberately highlighted by the light of a thunderstorm. Kuindzhi was able to overcome in his work the overstrain with which the special state of nature, which was characteristic of the works of the later romantics, is transmitted. The landscape is painted with special grace. The shades of light are incredibly subtle. You can feel the incredible integrity, which completely removes the contrasts of light.

Kuindzhi conveys impressions of Lake Ladoga. How quiet and majestic here. The painter seeks to depict the rocky bottom of the lake, which miraculously shines through the crystal clear water.

The painting “Lake Ladoga” opened the northern series of works of the famous painter. For the artist, the most important is the water space and the sky. The space is built very interesting. We feel how limitless it is. A single gamut of colors unites the lake and the sky. The color is incredibly saturated and intense. The lake and the sky seemed to be merged together. They completely pass into each other. The horizon, slightly perceptible, is the only border between them.

But the boundaries are maximally arbitrary, so you can fully feel the movement, the transition of one space to another.

The momentary freakishly moves to the future. Sand-gray clouds do not create a feeling of heaviness. They are balanced by a shore made up of detailed stones.

The thunderstorm atmosphere is underlined by the coldest range of blue and gray. The special game of shadow and light before the start of a thunderstorm is simply amazing.

The landscape is philosophically contemplative.
